Discovery Bay (DB) was a planned holiday resort which somehow ended up as a residential development not unlike many other developments in Hong Kong, China. It is located on the north-eastern coast of Lantau Island in the New Territories. It spans 6.5 square kilometres, though most of it remains undeveloped, on two bays, Tai Pak Wan and Yi Pak Wan.
DB is relatively low-density, boasts a privately-owned but publicly accessible beach, several private membership clubs including a golf and a marina club, and a bit more open space than most Hong Kong developments. DB, however, is the second most populous place on the sparsely populated Lantau Island. Furthermore, a "reasonable" number of pets are allowed, unlike in many other developments in Hong Kong. DB currently consists of 13 development phases with properties ranging from garden houses to high rise towers of up to 25 stories. DB is eventually expected to be home to 25,000 residents and a number of new phases are currently either under development or in the planning stages.
Community life in Discovery Bay is centered on DB Plaza, a commercial hub containing a bus terminus, ferry pier, an open piazza, and a range of shops including a supermarket operated by PARKnSHOP, specialty stores, restaurants and food outlets offering al fresco dining and drinking, medical clinics, and a vet to serve the large pet population.
