Conflict and violence have plagued much of Uganda since it gained independence in 1962. For the past 18 years, war has torn apart northern Uganda. The conflict, centered largely in the districts of Gulu, Pader and Kitgum, has already caused more than 1.6 million people to flee from their homes and move to makeshift settlements where they find little waiting for them. In addition to mounting an emergency response to help alleviate some of the suffering in the north, its teams are assisting refugees fleeing violence in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo. MSF also continues to treat people with infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and kala azar in remote parts of the country.
